For the past 3 months I have been taking part in the Broadband trial for this area, I think I was asked for 2 reasons, one being that I am a business user and also I am at the farthest point from the exchange being in Milley Bridge (11kms)
I would like to pass on the good news that after a couple of months of it looking like it was going to be a failure it is now working fine. I have tested it for my business use which means uploading and downloading files of up to 250mb, which it does with out dropping the line, I have also giving it a good work out on every day things , ie general surfing, emails, iplayer (not hd as bandwidth is not fast enough), shopping etc. and it has been very reliable with no freezing or dropping out.
The speed that is achieved is 1.4mb download and 0.35mb upload which equates to a 35mb file taking 3 minutes to download and 13 minutes to upload. I understand that the speed maybe faster the nearer you are to the exchange.
I do not know if and when BT will offer this to private users as I understand that it is still being negotiated between the developer and BT.
I have asked Steve Sharp at the Kenton Group who are hoping to get BT to take up the product to provide me with information on the technical side of the system and I will post this information as soon I get it.
UPDATE. i have had the following information emailed to me so I have pasted it below
How it works....... in the telephone exchange there is a unit that combines the broadband & phone services together which are then transmitted towards the customers house/office over 1, or where possible 2 phone lines in a way that is more suited to long distance than high speed. At the green cabinet situated between the telephone exchange & the house, the signal is then regenerated to help over come the long distance. And finally at the house, a small unit then converts the signal, back into the broadband & phone service that makes the line just like any other line! The main benefits of the system are that · the broadband is delivered to long distances · even if your main power fails, you still have the ability to make phone calls (normal & emergency calls) · the broadband line is available to all internet providers, so people at long distances are not excluded from services that other houses are able to participate in.
